Howlin' Wolf eats your soul in concert
He stood 6'6" and weighed 300 pounds. He would crawl out from the side wings of the stage to the microphone...and his voice was nasty enough to make you think he could melt it as he sang.
Although Hubert Sumlin (guitar) described his relationship with Howlin’ Wolf as that of a father and son, the two were known for having some knock-down, drag-out fights. One, in particular, took place after a gig, when Sumlin had wandered off with a cute girl that had been giving him the eye all evening. When he returned, Wolf was furious at having to load Sumlin’s gear and began cursing him out in front of the band. Embarrassed, Sumlin waited for Wolf, who was much bigger than he, to turn away, then he sucker punched him. Wolf slowly turned and back-handed Sumlin with enough force to send him sprawling down the loading ramp, spitting out teeth.
The next morning, Sumlin’s wife woke him and said Wolf had been sitting in his car, out front, all night. When Sumlin went outside, Wolf apologized, and gave him enough money to fix his dental work. When Wolf died in 1976, his funeral program listed Sumlin as his son.

Return to Forever: Brilliance onstage
Watching Chick Corea, Stanley Clarke, Al DiMeola, and Lenny White gel onstage as the entity known as Return to Forever is a visual-auditory jazz ballet for me.
It's as much about the minimal effort to produce such astounding colorful themes as it is the casual "got it in my back pocket" coolness that comes through everyone's hands and feet; the movement is the message. Just watch Lenny's hands--and keep in mind he's yet another lefty on a right-side kit: compact efficient simple effort makes a big sound. Or Stanley's dancing-on-a-pinhead speed on bass, jumping with deer-like quickness up and down the neck.
The Mahavishnu Orchestra, whom I dearly love as well, were more frenetic and explosive, but I'll swap that difference in velocity for Chick Corea's ability to turn the keyboard of choice into everything from a gently flowing liquid murmur of notes that hover like mist on a lake to a spicy hot acoustic piano's jazz grind. And I'll take a fair swap for Jan Hammer's synthesizer for Al's flamenco guitar runs. (Plus, Al could easily match chops with John M.).

Humble Pie in Concert
“It’s the first time we’ve really been four members in the same group. I can’t really explain the feeling. It’s like…. well…. it’s like. Screw it. It’s just good.”
This time Steve Marriott’s grin stuck. He knew he had just quoted a quotable quote.
